The Lake Champlain - also pronounced Lac Champlain in French - is a lake in eastern North America that straddles part of the boundary between New York State and Vermont and extends about 10 km, about 6 miles into Québec Province. It has an area of 1,100 square km, about 430 square miles and is 201 km, about 125 miles long. The Champlain Canal, a part of the New York State Canal System, links the lake with the Hudson River. Lake Champlain also is connected with the St. Lawrence River, in Québec. The lake has numerous islands, including Grande Isle, Isle La Motte, and Valcour Island. Including this amazing lake, the town of Vermont proudly boasts of more than 800 lakes and ponds, 284 of which are 20 acres large or more. The great Lake Champlain was named after Samuel de Champlain – the first European to pay it a visit in 1906. It enjoys a perfect location of being in a picturesque valley between the Adirondack and Green mountains, Lake Champlain has many summer and winter resorts.


The principal cities on the lakeshore are Burlington, Vermont, and Plattsburgh and Crown Point, New York. Attention was once drawn to this great lake some time ago when a Senator representing the region tried to pronounce it as the sixth Great Lake.
